CEDEJO's Sylvia Flores has been selected to receive the "MEXICO EN TUS MANOS" award on December 10th, 2019, in Mexico City. The "Mexico en Tus Manos", or "Mexico in Your Hands", award recognizes community leaders who have greatly impacted the country with their social commitment and love for Mexico. The Prize is awarded by the National Fraternity of United Organizations for Mexico. View Sylvia's recent interview with Mexico en Tus Manos TV.  Mexico ranks no. 1 for teen pregnancies among the 34 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). 6 out of 10 of those conceived around age 14 as a result of either sexual violence or a lack of access to contraceptives. Approximately 31% of adolescents aged between 15 and 19 have had sexual relations, but not responsibly: 56% of those cases resulted in pregnancies. A 2014 survey revealed that 44.5% of partners in that same age group used no contraceptive in their first sexual encounter. In addition, according to the United Nations Population Fund, Latin America is the only region in the world with an ascending trend in teenage pregnancy! CEDEJO's pregnancy prevention programs help educate youth so that they are better able to manage their sexuality and gives them access to affordable birth control. CEDEJO offers an Educational Program for Pregnancy Prevention and Sexual Awareness with Gender Perspective to teenagers and young adults in the Lakeside area. The goal is to deliver information on sexual education & help promote pregnancy prevention. $100,000 MXN (or $5,500 US Dollars) covers 6 months of workshops for up to 100 young adults. She has delivered hundreds of babies over her lifetime, usually for young women and families who could not otherwise afford or gain access to medical care, and offers midwife training for the most vulnerable populations in the region.
