Twice a week for the past two years CEDEJO volunteers, along with Director and Registered Nurse, Sylvia Flores, visit the Tepehua Community Center to provide free breast examinations, pap smears and family counseling to the women of Tepehua. The Tepehua community is one of the poorest and most vulnerable barrios in Jalisco. Without CEDEJO, many of the girls and women of this community would go without necessary and preventative gynecological care. Unfortunately, the local organization that has provided financial support for the clinic over the last two years is unable to continue funding due to restrictions beyond their or CEDEJO's control. Unless another funding source becomes available, CEDEJO will have to close the clinic at the end of August 2013. The clinic’s work is too important to give up on. After two years, regular counseling and exams have helped the community to make great strides forward in relation to women’s health and empowerment. When Sheila Poettgen, a volunteer for CEDEJO, heard that the clinic might be forced to close it's doors due to lack of funds, she decided to begin a personal online fundraising campaign to try to raise the funds necessary to keep the clinic open for another year. Although she had no experience with fundraising, nor any idea of where to begin, she explains how her campaign was born: "I felt heartbroken that the clinic might be forced to close its doors. It did not seem just that women who were my neighbors might be denied something that I had been privileged to receive throughout my lifetime. I felt I needed to do more. It was then that I decided to start a fundraising campaign to attempt to raise the money needed to keep the doors of the clinic open for another year."
